The power of choice
In 1997, Illinois state lawmakers deregulated Ameren Illinois Utilities (AIU) and Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd), two of the states largest electricity monopolies. While this allowed large commercial customers to purchase their power from an alternative retail electric suppliers (ARES), residential and small business customers were still forced to stay with their utility.
In 2008, the first residential customers switched to an ARES. Since then Illinois has become a robust competitive market which allows residential customers to choose an alternative retail electric supplier instead of being stuck with their utility.

Mega Energy offers fixed rate plans that lock in your rate for the entire term of your plan so you pay the same low rate, even if market rates go up. The utilities rates historically go up and down at least twice a year, Mega Energy fixed rate plans hold steady.
In addition, the utilities charge their customers a purchased electricity adjustment (PEA), a monthly fluctuating charge, or credit, to “true-up” what the utility paid for electricity and what they charged their customers. Mega Energy customers are never charged a PEA.
